Independent knowledge institute for inland shipping

The Expertise and Innovation Center for Inland Shipping (EICB) is the leading knowledge and project agency for innovation and sustainability in inland shipping. With its broad technical and economic expertise, EICB supports both public and private parties in research, policy development, and project implementation.

Through participation in national and international research projects and the implementation of subsidy schemes, EICB has up-to-date knowledge of technological and financial developments in the sector. The organization works in various partnerships, from national initiatives to European consortia, and helps entrepreneurs with advice on sustainability, retrofit solutions, and financing options.

Project management

We contribute by participating in (international) research and advisory projects and by setting up and maintaining strategic knowledge networks with leading players in the maritime (manufacturing) industry and services.

EICB carries out projects for both public and private parties, often in partnerships such as consortia. Within these partnerships, EICB fulfills various roles, depending on the specific needs. Our team has a balanced mix of junior and senior capabilities, enabling us to take the lead in provincial, national, and international projects as well as play leading roles at the work package level.

The EICB is the knowledge and innovation platform for Dutch inland shipping. We bring parties together, share expertise, and stimulate innovation. In this way, we strengthen the competitiveness of the sector and accelerate the transition to clean, smart, and safe shipping.

Subsidy schemes

EICB is involved in the implementation of two subsidy schemes that promote the sustainability of inland shipping. The Temporary Subsidy Scheme for the Electrification of Inland Waterway Vessels supports the construction and conversion of vessels that can sail fully electrically within the Zero Emission Services (ZES) concept. This contributes to the transition to emission-free propulsion with modular energy containers.

The Temporary Subsidy Scheme for Sustainable Inland Waterway Vessels focuses on reducing emissions in line with the Green Deal for Maritime Transport, Inland Waterway Transport, and Ports and the national nitrogen approach. The scheme will open on January 13, 2025, with a budget of €19 million. EICB is responsible for the implementation and assessment of applications and supports entrepreneurs in realizing sustainable investments.
