Synergetics
The SYNERGETICS project (Synergies for Green Transformation of Inland and Coastal Shipping) is an Innovation Action within Horizon Europe. It started in January 2023 and will run until June 2026, with a total budget of over €7.16 million, of which approximately €4.18 million is funded by the EU. The project focuses on greening the existing inland and coastal shipping fleet through retrofitting—by bringing together knowledge, experience, and stakeholders such as research institutions, shipping companies, shipyards, regulators, and technology providers.
SYNERGETICS demonstrates various retrofit solutions, including the use of hydrogen and methanol combustion in engines, hydrodynamic improvements, hybrid propulsion, and energy management systems for ships. In addition, the project is developing practical tools, such as a catalog of retrofit solutions, a handbook for ship owners, and policy scenarios for governments. With these tools, SYNERGETICS aims to accelerate the large-scale rollout of clean technology and contribute to the sustainable transition of the European shipping sector.
