RH²IWER
RH²IWER (Renewable Hydrogen for Inland Waterway Emission Reduction) is a Horizon Europe project running from March 2023 to August 2027, with a total budget of approximately €20.5 million, of which around €15 million comes from European subsidies.
In addition to the demonstration, RH²IWER is working on standardizing container-like fuel cell and hydrogen solutions so that they can be widely applied in the sector. Through practical trials, data analysis, and knowledge sharing, the project aims to demonstrate that inland shipping can operate emission-free and thus contribute directly to reducing greenhouse gas emissions to zero.
The project focuses on the large-scale deployment of hydrogen fuel cell-powered inland vessels. A total of six commercial vessels ranging from 86 to 135 meters in length will be equipped and demonstrated, including container ships, bulk carriers, and tankers. This fleet represents approximately 80 percent of dry and liquid cargo transport on the Rhine and Danube rivers.
